The Importance of AlgebraAlthough the proportion of Latino students eligible for admission to the University of California has increased in recent years, the rate is still low. Only 6.9 percent of California Latino high school graduates meet all eligibility requirements. The main barrier for Latino students is math. Ninth-grade algebra is very important, and large numbers of Latino students are not enrolling in this course. Without passing algebra in the ninth grade, students have little chance of meeting the eligibility requirements for admission to the University of California. During their high school years, students must take a minimum of 15 college-prep courses — including beginning algebra, advanced algebra and trigonometry. Parents should stay involved in their children’s education and be sure the school keeps their children in a curriculum that includes these math courses and all other subjects required for college admission.
